UPCOMING MEMBERS’
SHOW ~ 3rd. Annual People’s Choice Awards Show!
Our next Members’
show is June 25 – July 14. Work must be brought in between 12 and 1pm Tues.
June 24. This will be the “People’s Choice Show”. All visitors to the gallery,
members and nonmembers alike, will have the opportunity to vote for their
favourite piece of artwork. This year we will announce the winner and the
runners up a week before the end of the show. This will hopefully gain us
further press and draw more visitors to the Gallery. The winner will receive a
plaque donated by Bob and Sheila Pollock, and $100.00 gift certificate
generously donated by Phil Whyte of “Whyte’s Framing”. In addition there will
be draws made from the ballots for a prize to a member and a nonmember. The
People’s Choice winner will have the right of first refusal to appear as guest
artist at the following year’s Fall Fair. Last year’s winner, Saskia King, will
be this year’s guest artist at the Fall Fair, held Aug. 23 and 24th
at the Courtenay Fairgrounds. (No photography allowed in this show because of
the members photography show.)
IMPORTANT
~ Please call Sheila (339-5660) or email
pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca to register your entries by
June 1. You are limited to 1 painting approximately 24” x 30”, or 2 smaller

LEASE
AGREEMENT:
As most of you are
aware, the Pearl Ellis Gallery has a lease agreement in place with the Town of
Comox which will be in effect until April 1, 2009. This agreement is the best
we could do at this time as the town declined to negotiate for a longer period
before the upstairs leasing is settled. The town has decided to lease out the
top floor when the library relocates. This council’s current belief is that
they must try to obtain a renter that can pay current market value which is
something we could not do. The Comox Archives Museum will be sharing the
Filberg Lodge in the upcoming near future; exactly when they will vacate their
present location is unknown. There could possibly be an opportunity for the
gallery to move into the museum’s present space. Remember there will be a civic
election in November of 2008; that would be a good time for all Comox members to
direct questions to the candidates regarding plans for 1729 Comox Avenue. A new
council could make new plans for the use of the building, especially if it has
not been leased out by that time. The Gallery is grateful for the ongoing low
rent of $100.00 per month we currently pay. The membership must realize that
the town of Comox has provided our current space since 1977.

WORKSHOPS:
The Gallery is
interested in presenting affordable workshops to our artist/members but we need
someone to be the coordinator. This individual needs to be comfortable with a
computer, willing to set up the paperwork needed and comfortable with working
with deadlines. In order to offer four Fall workshops we need to find this
coordinator by the end of June. If you are interested in being the coordinator
please contact Sheila by email at pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca.

COMOX RECREATION
CENTER SHOWCASE SATELLITE GALLERY:
The Comox Rec Centre
is now showcasing the Pearl Ellis Gallery in its hallway display cabinets. One
(permanent) display cabinet holds information about the Gallery and its history,
while the others have “guest artists” whose work will be on display for two
month periods; this work is available for purchase through the Gallery. There
is no fee but the normal commission is taken by the gallery on any sale. These
artists are selected by the board to appear. This “satellite” venue greatly
raises our profile and two pieces which were on display there have already been
sold! We have the use of the showcases for the remainder of 2008. If any of
you are interested in displaying your work in a showcase for 2009 please contact
Sheila by phone at 339-5660 or email. We are taking bookings for 2009 as we
are hopeful the Centre will recommit the use of these showcases for next year.

HIGHLAND
SECONDARY SCHOOL SHOW:
As we did last year,
we are having a Students’ Art show in the Gallery which will run May 14 through
June 2. There will be a public opening the evening of Thursday, May 15th
from 7 – 9pm. Please note, there will be no member discounts available at this
show because no commission will be taken on work sold. We hope that all of the
members will turn out to see this wonderful display of student’s artwork, and
support these talented youngsters.

BURSARY FUND UPDATE:
Last year we gave
three $500.00 bursaries to the Valley high schools. Three local students
benefited from this program. This year we have managed to raise approximately
$1300.00 to date of the $1500.00 we need to repeat these awards this spring.
The gallery donation box proceeds between December 1st of last year
to the end of this year’s High School Show have been dedicated to the bursary
fund.
