My background was in academia (veterinary medicine and agriculture) in Ontario. In 2004, a few years after retiring and relocating to Comox, I began to explore painting. I paint with acrylics and water-soluble oils. My areas of interest are portraiture and landscape - particularly the great fun and challenge of painting on-location (plein aire).
I have taken classes at North Island College and workshops from a number of gifted artists and teachers in BC, California, New Mexico and Arizona.
I am working to improve my interpretive skills to be better able to translate what I see into colourful and interesting compositions. Every start is an experiment.
So much to learn - so little time.
I would enjoy receiving your comments and suggestions

Leonard Barrett
Studio Name:
Leonard Barrett Fine Arts Studio

During the nineteenth century, with the industrial
revolution and the new riches of North America a new middle class arose and
began commissioning pictures of landscapes, daily living and portraits. The
art of portraiture continued in its popularity, as cameras were not yet
invented, and it was sometime before color prints were available... Leonard
Barrett, a successful portraitist, specializes in Inuit, Native and Metis
Canadians.
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Leonard began his drawing career
in the prairies. In the 1960's he lived amongst the Inuit people of
Frobisher Bay and it was there that his interest in the local people
developed. Man y of the paintings of that time are now in private
collections. Recently, Mr Barrett moved from the South end of Vancouver
Island and has settled in the Comox Valley.
Leonard Barrett’s warm palette of siennas and ochres, brings a vitality to his portraits, capturing the spirit of the people, children, women and men including Chief Dan George. The individual faces each invoke different emotional responses. The faces never challenge the viewer; instead they draw you in closer, inviting you to stare.
If you have a special photograph of someone in the past or present and wish them to be transformed into a work of art, call Leonard at (250) 898-8239.

Gillian & her husband Mark recently launched Lost Boys Learning, their 3D animation and visual effects school in the Comox Valley. She keeps busy with the business, painting and raising their daughter Natalie and son Max. Gillian teaches production drawing techniques to the students at Lost Boys Learning.
Her painting interests lie with landscape and natural forms, using acrylics, watercolour, mixed media including photo transfer and oil pastels.

My goal
in portraiture is to capture your special moment when time truly stood
still for you. It is my belief and conviction that with enough attention
to detail, especially to the eyes of your loved one, we can truly
capture the nature of the soul - the source of light, life, and passion
for living.
Commissioned portraiture is creatively composed using
your favourite photos of people and pets in
oil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, coloured pencil, and acrylic, on surfaces
including varying papers, canvas, suede matboard, and sliced rock including
Brazilian Agate.

Polaroid Manipulation Process Photography
I have been working in
the medium of photographic manipulation for over 7 years. I am self-taught
in this process, learning mostly from trial and error. The process used to
create these artistic photographs is a unique one. The photos are shot with
an old 1970’s style Polaroid SX70 camera. The emulsion is then manually
manipulated directly on the photo with a stylus tool, blurring the lines of
what is perceived as conventional photography. The photos, which are printed
on archival quality canvas or watercolour paper, are often considered
painterly and dreamlike. Photographic reality slips in and out of view as
some elements of the photos are manipulated, while other aspects are left in
their natural state.

Most of my photographs focus on the natural beauty of the Comox Valley. I currently have a collection of over 120 photographs including: a sunflower series, an antique car series and a garden flower series. This process is limited in its body of work worldwide. Polaroid no longer makes the manipulating film (known as Time Zero); it was discontinued as of Dec. 2007. I recently acquired some film from Switzerland, and I have 80 shots left to complete my artistic journey working within this medium. As an emerging artist in a very unique field, I look forward to sharing my creative work with the Comox Valley community and beyond.

Ruth Dickson Studio Name:
My Space
Ruth has worked with several mediums over the years in exploring art. She
lived and worked in the Cowichan Valley for fifty years where she belonged to
the Crofton Art Group, The Cherry Point Artists and the POG Printers Only Group.
During this time she taught numerous classes, particularly batik and
silk-screen.
Since moving to Comox in 2002, Ruth has chiefly worked with watercolor, but her
latest work is in oil and acrylic. She likes best of all to work from her
own sketches, gathering inspiration from the immediate environment of the
moment. One of her images was included in a Scottish calendar in 2002 and
twelve more in 2003 for a California business calendar. Two murals are
backdrops for logging and fish trap models in the Sooke Museum.

I
paint with watercolours because the luminosity and flow of the
medium fascinates me. For me, painting is a nonverbal way to communicate. Art is
a passion that is never satisfied because the next painting holds the promise of
success or failure. Painting is a way I explore both the physical and spiritual
world. My subject matter is varied while my present focus is mainly paintings of
children playing in the series I call "Fairies Live Here". In these paintings, I
am working to capture the exuberance and innocence of childhood. Original
paintings and prints of flowers, cattle, birds and landscapes are also
available.

Allan Gray was born in Nova Scotia in 1944.
I graduated from Wayne State University and College for Creative Studies in Detroit Michigan in 1969. My BFA was in advertising photography with advertising design and illustration as minors. From there I worked for a large photo studio in Toronto. They produced catalogue photos for most of North America's department store catalogues,( Eatons, Simpson Sears, Sears Roebuck, JC Penneys, Alden's etc.)
After a heavy advertising career I took a summer position with a major airline
company that lasted 28 years. Now retired, my wife and I are setting up a
studio gallery at our home in Black Creek.
I've won several awards for my art. I use a different method of burning designs into wood called pyrographic art, and then use acrylic paints to finish. I've recently purchased my first digital camera and the first photo I took was published in last winters Echo newspaper. I am a member of the Pearl Ellis Gallery, Comox Valley Community Arts Council/Muir Gallery and the Comox Valley Art Gallery.

Drawing and painting give me great pleasure. Producing what I see, feel and create brings challenge and satisfaction. The results of my efforts, I believe, lie somewhere between realism and impressionism. After retiring from owning an Art Gallery, Framing Shop and Art Supply Store, I have been fortunate to be able to resume my own painting.

Landscapes,
still lifes, floral & portraits in watercolour and acrylics by Kay Hilborn
I
have always been interested in drawing and colouring but have had no formal art
training. After retiring in 1993 I decided to follow a dream and try
watercolour painting. I have taken a few short watercolour courses through North
Island College and found myself both fascinated and frustrated trying to learn
to handle the medium. Recently, I made a switch to acrylic painting and have
taken workshops with Neil Boyle and Donna Baspaly and a series of acrylic
painting classes with Marilym Timms.

Joyce Jay
I
have been painting in some sort of media since a
child. Now my love is for watercolour, but sometimes I branch into acrylics.
After moving to the Comox Valley a lot of my inspiration comes from the
beautiful scenery. Some of those pictures presently hang in
The Little Oyster Studio Gallery,
York Road, Campbell River, Tel. 250-923-9786, or at my home 339-0924. However in the past I have also painted portraits of pets,
scenes from overseas and various pictures of house properties. My pictures can
be seen in some of the local exibitions or by request.
Bev
lives and paints in Courtenay, BC.
She
is a self-taught artist and has always found painting to be a very relaxing and
satisfying occupation. When she can create something others can enjoy its an
added bonus.
Living most of her life on the
west coast and fishing with her husband on his west coast troller she learned a
lot about boats and feels that painting a boat is like painting a portrait as no
two are alike.
Other subjects she enjoys painting are street scenes, people doing everyday things and flowers. She paints mostly with oils but uses some acrylics.

In February of 1997, I opened “Saskia's Studio”, to give oil painting lessons. It has grown into a thriving studio where my classes and workshops focus on techniques and brushwork, colour theory, drawing, composition and style. I have also taught workshops and classes in the community. My own paintings are originals, old master reproductions or commissions. They have been sold to private and corporate collectors in Canada, Holland, England, USA, Costa Rica, China and Austria.
Quality and good taste is of foremost importance to me and I like to cover a diverse range of subjects with my artwork. My paintings are like my children, they must have a strong heart and soul so they can be felt as well as seen. I strive to achieve emotion with my paint through colour and light, with movement, and via nostalgia. If I fail in this, my paintings mean nothing and they will not be displayed.
To get inspiration I go for long walks in the woods with my dog observing nature’s fabulous colour schemes. Mostly my ideas come from warm feelings to a specific subject that I see. My mind is always in three places at once planning and trying to apply beautiful things into a painting. Eclectic is my nature.
What I love about painting is the ability to immortalize beauty onto a canvas so that it will never be lost and others can enjoy it also. When I succeed in my quest I am rewarded with good feelings of pride and accomplishment and relief as well, for it is always a stressful mission to achieve that extra bit of polish.
My family has lived in the Comox Valley since 1980 . My husband “Buster” is a carpenter who now builds elegant garden gazebos. We have hand-built our own home on a lovely spot and raised two sons there who have both become tradesmen and avid sports enthusiasts.

Sharon Lennox Studio Name: Hilltop Studio

I
an a student and producer of fine art. I grew up in a rural community and
have loved anything to do with nature and animals all my life.
In my paintings all my loves come together, animals, birds, nature, flowers and artistic craft. My medium is oils, I like the ease of mixing and the buttery texture which allows the paint to flow smoothly onto the canvas.
I paint from photos mostly, sometimes many photos for the development of one painting. The research, planning and set up of a painting can take as long if not longer than the painting itself.
I guess the main thing is that I absolutely love what I do, hope to still be learning and painting when I am ninety.

I have been
"into" photography since 1986, learning first with a 35mm SLR
camera. I have done all aspects of darkroom work, and framing, and
recently graduated to digital format cameras. My first love is shooting
scenery and wildlife, mostly local, and producing photo cards, magnets
and enlargements which retail in various Comox Valley outlets. The
achievement of which I am most proud, however, is the Comox Valley
Calendar which is currently in its fifth year of production.
The 2008 Comox Valley Calendars are available for sale at Blue Heron Books, Coles Books, Pearl Ellis Gallery, Comox Valley Art Gallery, Arizona Gifts, Courtenay Museum and Mid Island Gifts at the Airport.
I try to attend at least 3 large Craft Shows every year, so that I can
meet the buying public and see what it is they are looking for. We have
photographs available for sale which artists can work from, and for more
details, please

Teresa L'Hirondelle
Studio Name: Sea Swallows Studio

My medium is mainly watercolour. The luminosity and the challenge of controlling the medium without over doing it, I love the exciting effects sometimes like magic the water colour medium depicts the west coast ocean scenes better than other medium, as we know the greatest watercolorists are from Britain a place surrounded by sea and mist. ............ I create paintings because I have always been artistic. Now that I am living on the island I am incredibly inspired to interpret the space around me not just record it with a camera. I paint portraits seascapes and old houses(I love reflections and the way light shines through cloth).

My interest in painting began when I first
watched painting shows on television. The magic of starting with a blank
canvas and finishing with what appears to be a three dimensional painting was
fascinating.

Kingfisher Inn, D.D. Fashions, The Old House, Town and Country Gift Shop,
Courtenay Library and the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria.

Sandra & Walter Moses
Studio Name:
Ablaze Metal Art & Design
Walter and Sandra Moses are the creative force behind Ablaze Metal Art and Design. They’ve been in the Comox Valley for two years now, having moved from the Lower Mainland to be nearer to family here. Their new business is a dream come true for both of them. Sandra has been involved in creative pursuits of one kind or another her whole life and Walter has worked with steel for 34 years, building things like frames for telescopes at observatories in Hawaii and Chile, rides for Disney theme parks, catwalks in mills, and bridges. Now he turns Sandra’s ideas into art. Their slogan is, “If you can dream it, we can make it.”
The dreaming image reflects the
Moses’ Native heritage. Walter is Six Nations, originally from Southern
Ontario, and Sandra is Coast Salish from the Hwilitsum band in Ladner. Native
art is part or their extensive repertoire. The designs in this facet of their
work reflect Sandra’s coastal origins: whale, raven, and frog, among others.
Sandra
and Walter also create non-Native art and can, as their slogan says, create your
art as well. This can take the form of wall-hangings or freestanding pieces.
The number of applications for decorative metal art is
extensive. For the garden, they have insets for gates or designs mounted on
stakes for planting. For the home, they make firescreens and insets for
railings and door screens. For business, they can reproduce your logo in metal,
make security coverings for windows and doors, and signage. As their slogan
implies, what they can do is only limited by the imagination.

"My landscapes reflect a strong connection to earth and it’s natural beauty, and my need of, and love for, wide-open peaceful spaces. Born under the sign of Pisces, I have a particular affinity for beaches, the ocean and smaller bodies of water, which frequently appear in my work.
I also love to garden and care for house plants. I find that painting a closer, more detailed view of nature provides a stimulating change from landscapes. Painting on Masa paper produces a quite different look to some of my work and always brings questions from curious viewers.
Currently working mainly in watercolours, I like to explore ways of using basic materials to achieve different effects; for example pouring paint and allowing it to blend without my assistance."

Angela Wadsworth Studio Name:
Simply Angela

Angela
Wadsworth was born in Hereford, although she spent much of her childhood in
Germany, before completing her education in Yorkshire and East Anglia. Between
the ages of fourteen and sixteen she won several prizes for her sculpture work,
later
gaining a scholarship to Art College. Unfortunately she was
unable to take up the scholarship.
Angela’s Grandfather, Edward Greenwood, was a famous
illusionist and artist, so it’s not difficult to see where she gets her talent
from.
While living in Canada, Angela found a great deal
of inspiration from the Canadian First Nation Artists. Their simplicity of work
influenced her enormously, and she was to create a style and interpretation of
her own which has proved to be very successful, and a joy to behold.
The mediums Angela uses most are pencil, and pen & ink. Although she loves water colours, and likes to use acrylic for her more abstract styles of art work. Simplicity, clarity, variety, and extreme are all words that express her distinctive technique.
“My style is very varied and extreme, sometimes no detail, to maybe too much detail. I am learning every day and I have over 30 years of ideas just trying to get out.”
