President’s Message---Sheila Pollock
Three pieces of great news!!!!
1st
–
NO MORE TAX
at the gallery.
With the HST in force the Pearl Ellis falls under the category
of a “small supplier” and does not collect the tax. Now what
the tag reads is what the purchaser pays.
2nd -
We applied to the Comox Valley Regional District for a grant-
in- aid
and have received
a grant of $1,500.
Areas A, B and C have each given us $500. This is much
appreciated.
3rd -
The Comox Business in Action (BIA) is running a Summer Sundays
feature to attract more shoppers. The marketing director
contacted the gallery and solicited our help. In return for
finding artists for the eight Sundays involved,
the gallery
earned $400.
Every bit helps and thank you to all who responded so quickly to
our email. This was a last minute opportunity and we only had
time to reach members with email. The list of who is appearing
each Sunday at the town circle (corner across from the Lorne
with the trellis work) is on the home page of the website. Just
scroll down. If anyone one else is interested in this free
venue just contact Sheila. There is room for at least three at
a time.
Attendance is steady at the gallery even with the construction
by the Town of a new deck and stairway. A big thank you goes
out to Hans Larsen for painting the temporary wall with our name
and that of our neighbours. Hans donated five days of time to
the project and it looked very good. This safety wall has just
been removed and the result is an improved open space at the
entrance.
Now if we
could come up with some ideas for the outside wall – get
creative and pass your ideas to me please.
Summer is a
busy time for all and I want to extend a giant THANK YOU to all
the volunteers who give so generously of their time to the Pearl
Ellis. This is what makes the gallery so unique in the
community. We are ALL volunteers and without this tremendous
spirit of giving the gallery would cease to exist. Big pats on
the back everyone, you deserve it! If you have never tried
being a host at the gallery there is always room for more
volunteers. Just contact Sheila or Vicki to get involved.
Bursary Recipients for 2010
The following students received $500 each to use for their post
secondary education in visual arts. I am very proud that our
little gallery
manages to do this and many people are impressed with us for
this achievement. The recipients are:
Highland Secondary – Melody Chen
Mark R. Isfeld – Erica Greenup
Vanier - Adelaide Stewart
Peoples’ Choice Award Results
The award winner for 2010 is Bev Johnston with her painting
“Vienna Rail Station”. Bev won the plaque donated by Bob and
Sheila Pollock, the $100 gift certificate from Phil Whyte and
the right of first refusal to appear as the demonstration artist
at the 2011 Pearl Ellis Gallery info booth during the Courtenay
Fall Fair. The art work that is produced by the artist at this
event then becomes the featured work at the 2011 Anniversary
show at the gallery. Winning the Peoples Choice award leads to
good exposure for the artist.
This year’s runners up are:
1st- Sharon Lennox with “Double Vision-Mallard Pair”
2nd- Steve Williamson with “Black and White”
3rd- Julie Reynolds with “Maple Leaf Turning”
4th- Martin Kaspers with “ Morning Mist”

1.Anniversary show ( Full!!)
Anyone wishing to be on a waiting list for The third members
show of the season, titled “Anniversay Show, runs from Sept. 15th
to Oct. 4th should contact Sheila.
2. Christmas Fundraiser Show & Sale Sunday Nov. 28th
to Dec. 18th
This year we
are going to combine some ideas. Once again we will have a
price point for the show. Like last year, the highest price
that can be put on a piece will be $300. This was well received
by the public and we sold over $3,000 worth of art. To make
this a fundraiser we are asking all members who take part to
agree to a 50/50 split with the gallery. If anyone wishes to
donate the entire proceeds then we certainly won’t refuse.
Those of you who are the established artists in the community
will hopefully create a small piece that can be sold for the
stated price point. Remember, at this time of year, purchasers
are often looking for a smaller piece as a gift. I hope to
really fill the gallery, give the public tremendous choice and
raise at least $1500.
Registrations being taken immediately! Remember you may have
one large piece no bigger than 24 x 30 or smaller ones totaling
up to a similar area. For this show we will only collect $2 per
artists to cover reception costs. The work is to be brought in
Saturday Nov. 27th between 11am – 1pm. Call Sheila
at 250-339-5660
or email
pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca
to enter the show.
Artists that register are contacted approximately 2 weeks prior
to the show with a reminder. Once registered your name will
appear on the website as being registered under upcoming shows!
