Results from the Spring General Meeting

On April 2nd, 2007 the Spring General Meeting was held in the gallery at 7:00pm.  The meeting was attended by 4 of the gallery members along with the Executive.  At the meeting the financial  report for 2006 was presented and passed.  Two new directors were elected at this time.  They are Len Harrison and Hans Larsen.  Tom Devereux resigned effective March 31^st and Charles Allen will be not be joining the Executive.  The Board of Directors is now composed of the following:

Pearl Ellis Gallery Financial Award

Part of our constitutional mandate is to provide improved opportunities for talented artists. We have chosen to do this in two ways. The first was by hosting a high school student art show on April 4^th to 23^rd.  Secondly, we are presenting a $500.00 financial award to each of the 3 high schools.  This is to go to students who are intending on continuing their studies in the arts next year.  It would be our hope that we would continue to do this each year.  This year it was done to celebrate our 30^th year of operation. 

We would like feedback from our membership.  To provide us with further direction, do you feel this is something the gallery should pursue as a yearly expense?  We do not want to wait until the annual meeting in November before making a decision on this. 

Ballots can be found at the gallery.  Please come in and fill out one of the ballots and let us know your opinion.  We ask that you do this between now and Saturday, June 23.  You are only to submit one ballot.  A draw will be made from the ballots cast for a free membership renewal for 2008.

Town Council

We have no news at this time regarding the library and our status!!!

Website

 Just a reminder we offer a number of free services through the site.  They are:

·        Member shows are advertised on the site, as well as GoBC, Comox Valley Tourism, The Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce, Comox by the Sea, World Webs, and the Chamber Alert put out by the Chamber of Commerce.

·        Members may put web and personal bios on the artist’s directory on the site.

·        Members may advertise workshops, lessons and other gallery information on the site.

·        The site provides links to other galleries, artists and sites that reciprocate the linkage.

·        We send out invitations to receptions and announce the opening of each show through email.

·        We are working on a new feature that is slowly evolving on our site involving virtual sales.  We will see how successful we are with this before offering it to members.

Memberships

All memberships are now overdue.  If you haven’t renewed yours for 2007 it should be done as soon as possible. You can either drop into the gallery or go to the website and get an application form and send it in with your payment.

You must be a member in good standing in order to display your work. The Pearl Ellis Gallery has three Members’ Shows every year, which gives you the opportunity to show at least one piece for the wall each time at no charge. The Executive must retain the right to limit art due to available space.

Volunteer Tea

To show our appreciation to our hard working staff of volunteers we are hosting a tea on Saturday, June 23^rd.  We sincerely hope that you will mark this date on your calendar and drop by the gallery to help thank the many volunteers.  Remember without these people giving their time we would not be able to run the gallery.

Photography Show – August 8^th to 20^th. (2 weeks) – THIS IS A MEMBER’S SHOW!!!

This year we want this show open to the membership!  Any member who wishes to submit photography to this show is asked to contact Sheila Pollock by either email or phone.  (pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca  or 339-5660)  We appear to have an increasing number of photographers joining the gallery.  We need to know well in advance to ensure we have enough participation to present a good show.  This show will take place during the Comox Business In Action Photo Fest.  We will not be part of their judging but will be part of their program.  Photography will be brought in August 7^th at noon but you will have to pre-register to be in the show.  Pre-register by contacting Sheila by June 30^th.

Kick-off to Summer – ‘Upcoming Members’ Show’

Our next members’ show is June 27^th to July 16^th.  Work must be brought in between 12 and 1pm., Tuesday, June 26^th.  This will be the “People’s Choice Show”.  All visitors to the gallery, members and nonmembers alike, will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece of art work.  At the end of the show the ballots will be counted to determine the winner.  The winner receives a plaque and a reward yet to be determined.  Draws will be made from the ballots for a prize to a member and a nonmember.

The Members Fall Show (October 3rd – 22^nd)

This is the show that marks OUR  30^th year anniversary !!!

This fall we would like to present a miniature show that will allow the public more opportunity to buy Christmas gifts early.  Think affordability when you are planning what you will submit. We are asking that work be no larger than 9 x 12.  Therefore, consider the possibilities with the following possible sizes, 3 x 4, 5 x 7, 6 x 8, 8 x 10 and so on…..  We would like this to be the biggest little art show in the valley.  All work must be ORIGINAL.  Subject matter is your choice.  All work must be FOR SALE.  We are not limiting work to one piece per artist.   We are hoping to have our largest member participation at this show.

Lions Recycle For Sight

A box for old eye glasses can be found in the gallery on the back shelf.  The Lions Club are collecting these and we are supporting their efforts.  Anyone with old glasses is encouraged to drop them off at the gallery.
