Membership information
Memberships now run from January to December of the current year, and are due on January first.
There have been quite a few changes in the Gallery over the past year. With our increased advertising blitz we more than doubled the number of visitors through our doors in 2006. The feedback from the public has been all positive. They are continually astounded at the scope and quality of the work that we show... cudos to you, the artists!
The membership cards have been changed, so even though you may have already received a card for 2007 we wanted you to have a new one. If you notice on the reverse of your card, the show schedule for the coming year has been mostly filled. The new shows will run for three weeks. The exception to this is the Members' Photography Show, which runs for two weeks in conjunction with the Town of Comox Photo Fest. An individual or group show fee has risen to $100.00 for the three weeks. This, together with a $12.00 yearly membership is still the best bargain in town.
We are planning to have a Reception, or at least a "Meet and Greet" for every show, and we find that the public really attend these openings. They love meeting the artists. We would encourage you to invite your friends and visitors to attend the gallery whenever you can.
As members of the Pearl Ellis Gallery, you now
have the opportunity to take advantage of some new "perks". We are offering a 10%
discount to current members at any "Reception or Meet and Greet" for a new show.
This 10% discount is available the day a person takes out their membership. We have:
- PJ's Art Supplies on board with an offer of 10% off supplies
purchased when showing your current membership card.
- White's Framing offers 10% off on all framing
purchased when showing your current membership card.
- Affordable Framing on Cliffe offers 10% off on all framing purchased when
showing your current membership card.
- A & V Photography (Vicki & Al Lapp) offer 10% off of
matted and framed
prints, card and magnet making materials; as well as small cards (not available
in gallery).
We will let you know of any
new sponsors as they come on board.
The web site is a major asset to the Gallery. It allows for 24 hour exposure to the world. We have numerous links to other sites and offer every member the opportunity to be promote themselves/work on the artist directory. You must request to be placed on the artist directory. The site is continuously evolving as new ideas are explored. Be sure to check out the virtual gallery that has been loaded to the site. Please pass on the site url to all your contacts.

WHAT YOUR GALLERY OFFERS YOU…THE ARTIST
With a membership in the Pearl Ellis Gallery, you really do get more bang for the buck. Here are just a few things that we offer to our membership:
1) Three all Members' shows per year which run for three weeks and which are free to any Pearl Ellis Gallery Member to enter.
2) One Members' Photography show which offers those of you with photographic work a chance to show in conjunction with the very successful Photo Fest run by the town of Comox. This show is two weeks in duration (during the month of August) and like other Members' Shows is free to participants.
3) Our Gallery is open from 1 - 4 pm daily with free admittance. Hosts and hostesses are able to answer questions from visitors and sell work which is on display.
4) We have a very successful website which is free of charge to the members and presents our Gallery far and wide with many links to tourism spots. We have an online directory of artists who wish to participate and a virtual gallery. Those of you with computers are urged to check it out, send it to all of your friends, and if you have any questions, contact the web person, Bob Pollock at 339-5660.
5) We provide the Gallery for shows to be hung, professional hangers to hang and light the shows. We provide posters and web site information, wall tags, advertising in several local venues and tourism sites. We take Visa and Mastercard for purchases of artwork and take care of PST collection. We pay the artist within two weeks of the end of their show for any work which has sold and our commission is only 25%. If you have places where you would like your posters hung, please ask for extras and we are happy to provide these. We also provide rack cards at several places throughout the Valley which cater to tourists.
6) We maintain memberships with Tourism Comox Valley and the Chamber of Commerce so that we can access tourist connections through them.
7) We take advantage of all free advertising available as well as paid advertising with our local newspapers.
8) All of our staff are volunteer as well as our Hosts/Hostesses. If you can spare a few hours one or two afternoons per month and would like to sit in the Gallery, we would be most appreciative, anyone wishing to do so, please call Vicki @ 338-5982.
POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR GALLERY SHOW
1) A consignment sheet is provided where all works of art are to be legibly listed by number, name of artist, medium and price. Stickers are provided for all work and must be attached to the frame on the bottom right comer and correspond to the number on the consignment sheet. This aids the printing of information cards which are done by the Gallery and are displayed on the wall beside your artwork. All artwork is required to be brought into the gallery between 12:00 and 1 :00 pm on the day of the hanging. Artwork is to be picked up between 4pm and 5pm on the last day of the show. At this time the artist is required to initial beside their entry on the consignment sheet to indicate that they have removed their work from the show.
2) All artwork must be framed or suitably prepared for public presentation. Unframed work is acceptable if done on gallery wrap canvas painted on all sides. Frames and matt must be in good condition with appropriate hardware and wires. Clip framing and any work not properly prepared will not be hung. During Members' Shows, we request that you limit your entry to one piece in order to give everyone a chance to participate. If you wish to enter more than one piece, it must be cleared with Sheila Pollock (show co-ordinator) prior to the time. In some cases where work is small or consists of pieces which may be presented on plinths, exceptions can be made. The Gallery has the discretion to refuse work.
3) If you have booked shows for the current year, you will have received packages with sheets which must be filled out and returned to the Gallery with plenty of lead time. This is necessary to deal with all the preparation, publicity and planning which must go into every show. The Gallery must have a press release and pictures of your work for newspaper coverage, web site information and posters which will be displayed around town. These need to be in our hands at least 1 month prior to the event. This allows us to advertise the current show and the upcoming show at the same time.
4) We encourage you to arrange a reception for your show or at least a "Meet and Greet the Artist". If it is a Members' Show, we urge you to participate in the opening Reception. Each exhibiting member is asked to bring a small plate of finger food to the event. The Gallery provides punch and coffee.
5) When you book a show, you will receive more concise Policy and Procedure forms, but this gives you an idea of what is expected of you. If you wish to book a show, you should contact Show Co-ordinator, Sheila Pollock, at 339-5660 as early as possible. 2007 is booked and 2008 is being prepared. We like to have contingency shows on deck in case of cancellations.
