MAJOR HAPPENINGS FOR THE YEAR 2009 TO DATE:

1. HOSPICE SOCIETY:

 With the help of one of our members we were able to give a painting as a donation for the Rotary’s Club on-line auction.  The auction is in support of the Hospice Society.  We would like to thank Petra Herselman for the 2 paintings she donated.  The painting currently being bid on is called “Sunflower” and can be seen on the Rotary Site at www.courtenayrotary.com. 

There are many wonderful items up for sale so take a look.  The Valley needs this hospice.

2. FUNDING FOR 2010

On March 9^th we received a donation of $500.00 from our neighbours, the Comox Valley Lions.  The Lions have been doing this for many years.  In return the gallery assists them with their annual Christmas Fundraiser Bingo.  Its good to have helpful neighbours!

This past month we applied for a BC Gaming Grant for the year 2010.  We were successful in obtaining a grant in 2008 for our 2009 year, and are hoping we will be again. 

The majority of the money raised by the gallery for it’s continual operation continues to be through memberships, donations and commissions.

 3. ATTENDANCE IS UP, SALES ARE DOWN FOR 2009

As of March 31^st, 2009 attendance in the gallery continues to surpass last year, to date the  increase is 18% over the previous year.  Although we have seen increased traffic, sales have dropped by over 50%.  Our attendance goal for 2009 is 7000 visitors so set yourself a goal to come see each show and bring a friend.

4. SATELLITE GALLERIES

Reminders: In 2009 we have 5 showcases at the Comox Rec Centre for artists to exhibit their work.  The exhibits run for 2 months.  Each showcase displays a different artist.  We have 6 shows during the year and at present we have the 2009 schedule complete.  Anyone wishing to exhibit in “2010” please contact Sheila at 250-339-5660 or email pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca .  

The Comox Library schedule consists of 2 months exhibits.  One artist displays their work during this time.  The exhibitor must be a Comox artist (this is a condition set out by the library).  Presently the schedule for 2009 is complete.  If you wish to exhibit in “2010” contact Sheila at 250-339-5660 or email pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca

All exhibiting artists at the satellite galleries are listed on our website: www.pearlellisgallery.com .  Their bios are also on display on the door of the gallery.

5. NEW AND IMPROVED LIGHTING!

At the beginning of March the gallery updated its current lighting.  With a capital investment of just under $3000.00 we were able to add fluorescent lighting in the center of the gallery and increase the number of display lights.  Some of the existing display light fixtures also needed to be replaced. 

6. GALLERY WEBSITE

We would like to draw members attention to a number of features that are offered on our website.  We have four areas that members can make submissions to at NO COST.  They are features we offer as part of your membership.  They are: FOR SALE ADS, ARTIST DIRECTORY, WORKSHOPS AND LESSONS PAGE and GALLERY ROOMS (Example).

If you have anything you wish to submit to be put on these pages contact Bob by email at pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca or phone 250-339-5660.  All items submitted must be done by way of picture files or word document files.

7. MEMBERS SHOWS 2009

June 24^th – July 13^th Members People’s Choice Show (no photography)
July 29^th – August 10^th Members Photography Only Show
September 16^th – October 5^th Members Anniversary Show
November 29^th – December 19^th Members Christmas Show ($250.00 or less)

******* The June 24^th – July 13^th Members People’s Choice Show was open for registration as of January 15^th.   You must contact Sheila by email (pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca) or phone (250-339-5660).  No other method please!  The registration closes for this show by May 24^th or as soon as we reach capacity.  Each member will be restricted to 1 piece of work, nothing bigger than 24” x 30” or small pieces taking up similar area. ******

Registrations for the other shows will be announced in the next newsletter.  Newsletters will be published quarterly.

8. ATTENTION PHOTOGRAPHERS

The annual Members’ Photography Show is scheduled this year to run from July 29 to August 10.  This popular show books up quickly and the call for entry will be open until April 30^th.  In order to participate you will be required to pre-register by calling Vicki Lapp at (250) 338-5982, or emailing to ahlapp@shaw.ca.  By May 15^th you will be contacted to let you know the size and number of pieces that  can be entered into the show.  Work will be brought into the Gallery Tuesday July 28^th and picked up on August 10.  If you cannot manage this, you must arrange to have someone do it for you.  You will also be required to sign up as “guest artist” during the show.  The Gallery is open extra hours during the Photo Show as it runs in conjunction with Filberg Festival and Nautical Days as well as Photo Fest.  FMI contact Vicki at 338-5982.

In other Photography news, clients of Studio One can now find Dave and Doug at #105 -2270 Cliffe Avenue operating as “Raincoast Photographic” for continued photo services.

PEG member Martin Kaspers also offers many services to photographers such as High Resolution Scans, custom framing, and enlargement printing on Canvas and Fine Art Paper.  To contact Martin, call (250) 337-5886.

9. NEWSLETTER

Our next newsletter will come out the week of July 1^st and October 1^st .   Any members wishing to make a submission for that newsletter is welcome to send the submission to Bob at pearlellisgallery@shaw.ca by June 14^th.  It can include workshops, lessons or…try and be as brief as possible.

11. MEMBERS' ACCOMPLISHMENTS

We would like to congratulate Sharon Lennox for having been chosen as one of three finalists by the BC Wildlife Federation artist of the year competition for her work depicting wildlife.  More on her accomplishment will appear in July’s newsletter once the final judging is over.

12. SUPPORTING BUSINESSES

Reminder: The following businesses are working with the gallery by offering 10% off on purchases when a member shows their current membership card.  These businesses have also sponsored us through various donations.  They are:   Whyte’s Framing, PJ’s Art Supplies, Affordable Custom Picture Framing, A & V Photography, Sure Copy and Ryan Parton Writing Solutions.

A  reminder about shopping at Quality Foods in Comox.  If you buy at Quality Foods and want to donate your points to the gallery,  you can do so.  Just tell the cashier that you want your points to go to the Pearl Ellis Gallery.   Quality Foods has become a special business supporter as they allow us to promote the gallery shows with table top advertising in their dining room and on their reader board.  This is greatly appreciated.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO SHAW TV, CHANNEL 4, THE DAILY!  They have promoted 3 of our shows so far this year on their community channel.
