President’s
Message---Sheila Pollock
Happy New
Year to all of you and a giant bouquet of Thanks to all the members,
that found time to volunteer their time in the gallery. It is important
to remember that our little gallery is quite unique in that it is solely
operated and run by members with no money being paid out in salaries;
this includes all the directors. Without volunteers the gallery would
not exist.
The other major difference is the gallery does not
receive any tax dollars to sustain it. The space has been leased to the
society by the Town of Comox at a very nominal rent of $100 per month.
Although we were successful in obtaining a B.C. Gaming grant for 2009 we
could not get it for 2010 as the government reallocated those funds away
from arts and culture for this year. We are back to sustaining the
gallery primarily through donations, membership fees, show fees and the
income generated from the sale of artwork. Our membership fee is now
$20 and it still is a bargain at that, as members receive numerous
benefits.
It
is now time to renew your membership if you did not do so before the
Christmas break. Our memberships run from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of each
year. We will be sending out renewal reminders to those of you that
have not yet been in. If we make an error please let us know as we
strive to be accurate. We also need to know if you have changed your
email in order to keep you up to date. Vicki Lapp has now handed the
membership record keeping over to Emma Tillotson and Vicki is now
coordinating the hosting schedule.
I am
delighted to report that 5,988 people visited the gallery in 2009 so our
attendance was virtually the same as in 2008. Although the dollar
volume of sales was off by 47% the number of sales compared to the year
before was greater by 18%. The highest price point sold was $800. The
average sale price was $185 for 2009 and that was down from the average
sale price in 2008 of $250. It appears that visitors are still buying
art but are looking for the smaller more affordable pieces.
New Hosting Co-ordinator
Vicki
Lapp
Over the
past five years, I have handled the memberships for the Pearl Ellis
Gallery, refining the process and trying to ensure that everything is up
to date. Our membership has grown remarkably over this period, and I
have been very pleased to be a part of that process.
I personally want to thank all of the many
member/artists who volunteer their time to sit in the Gallery as Hosts
and Hostesses. You are invaluable to us and we appreciate you, more
than you can know. If you are currently Volunteers, thank you!!! If
you have ever wanted to try it out, you might like it. You will receive
a short training session to cover your ‘duties’ that are simple and easy
to do. If you are currently a Host or Hostess, I will likely be
speaking with you in the near future. I look forward to meeting and
working with all of you. Again, thank you for your participation. If
you would like to give it a whirl, please call me any time at (250)
338-5982 and we can talk about it. There is no pressure to do copious
hours... some volunteers only come in once every couple of months. We
are open to accommodating you if you have a preference for certain days,
or even seasons. Remember the old adage - give a little and you get
back a lot. Trust me, it really works! Thanks again.
