NEWSLETTER – May 17th/2010
President’s Message---Sheila Pollock
It’s my pleasure to report we have some great news! The Town of
Comox has responded favourably to our request to have the rent
reduced to $1 per year for the remainder of the five year
lease. Our lease will not come up for renewal until September
18th 2013. We are now back at the original lease
arrangement that the gallery enjoyed from its beginnings in 1978
to 1999.
Another piece of wonderful news was the granting of signature
status on one of our members, Brian Buckrell. We congratulate
Brian on his achievement and look forward to having his
continued support as a member. Brian has placed copies of his
book in the gallery.
The gallery has received a donation from the local chapter of
the Federation of Canadian Artists. It is with mixed feelings
that I thank them for it as it was done due to the disolvement
of the chapter and it is a shame that happened. Perhaps one day
it will rise again. Their remaining funds were divided into
three donations and on behalf of the Pearl Ellis Gallery I
extend our heartfelt appreciation in being selected to receive
this money. We received $1218 and it will be very helpful to
offset the extreme slow down in sales being experienced so far
this year.
To keep you up to date, the sales have dropped from last year at
the same time to less than 10%. A 90% drop in funds from sales
is a hard pill to swallow. We are still managing due to reserve
funds and the fact we run on unpaid volunteer power. Hopefully
the summer will see us return to more normal purchasing
patterns. We can all help the cause by continuing to spread the
word about shows, bringing in friends, family, and associates as
this goes a long way in making everyone aware of the existence
of the gallery. I have personally stopped buying specific
occasion cards at other stores and am now getting art cards at
the gallery to use for birthdays etc. It’s just one little way
to help out.
Our attendance is down only slightly and I’m confident that will
bounce back. Right now we have seen almost 2000 visitors so far
this year. Once again we’re hoping to have between 6000 and
7000 by the end of our year. As a reminder, we had just under
6000 visitors in 2009.
Our membership numbers are very good and right on track with
many new members having joined this Spring. We are just under
200 at present and once everyone renews we’ll be well over that
figure. We have averaged 225 current members by the end of each
of the past two years.
In conclusion, on behalf of all the directors, I extend the
biggest “THANK YOU” possible to all the volunteers who make this
gallery work.
Bursary Recipient Feedback
Kathryn McClure - Bursary Recipient from Highland School in 2008
has sent us an update on her progress. She has just graduated
with a diploma in Visual Arts from Vancouver Island University.
She graduated with honours and won two prestigious awards.
Kathryn has been accepted at University of Victoria in the
Bachelor of Fine Arts Program where she will be majoring in
Visual Art and Art History. She will be starting there in
September. Kathryn wanted to thank the Pearl Ellis Gallery for
the bursary presented to her in 2008 when she graduated from
Highland School in Comox. It was "very much appreciated and
used to good advantage". We wish her every success in the
future and feel honored to have helped open doors for this
deserving and very talented Comox Valley student.
