Betty Studied at the Art Center
College of Design when it was on 3rd Street in Los Angeles, and
at the California Art Institute in Westlake Village, California.
Neil Boyle, the famed International Impressionist, was her
husband and teacher until his demise in 2006. "I continue to
paint because that's what he taught me to do. And, it's
gratifying." she says.
Ms. Boyle acquired
the status of Active Member in the Federation of Canadian
Artists. A piece entitle, "The Ballet Class" was juried into the
FCA's open international exhibition, Painting on the Edge. Her
works were featured at the Timms Fine Art Gallery in Courtenay,
BC; The Nanaimo Art Gallery; The Main Street Gallery in Sidney,
BC; Magnolia Gallery in Cumberland, and the La Costa Gallery of
Fine Art in La Costa, California. Her paintings were juried into
the Filberg Lodge's annual festival in Comox, BC and appeared in
many Comox Valley Chapter FCA Shows where they've been
recognized by receiving Awards of Excellence.
"I lean towards
figurative subjects using photographs as reference material.
Part of the pleasure of being an artist is the license to
experiment. Every painting is an experiment. I'm never quite
sure of what the outcome will be. In addition to figurative work
I've begun playing with still lifes and landscapes en plein air.
Jeeze, there's a lot to paint out here."
My favorite painting
is a portrait I did of the grand daughter of some very dear
friends. To see the pleasure on their faces when I presented the
painting was a most gratifying experience.
Betty now resides in
Cumberland where she continues to paint just about anything.

Calhoun is an award winning Vancouver Island artist who paints still lifes,
florals, pet portraits and tranquil scenes in acrylics and watercolors. Brenda
believes that painting is an expression of the soul. Her paintings are an

light achieved by some impressionist painters and her work is gradually evolving
toward that style of painting.
Brenda
is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a member of the Comox
Valley Community Arts Council/ Muir Gallery, the Pearl Ellis Gallery and the

Donna Cannon Studio Name:
Moments in Time
My goal
in portraiture is to capture your special moment when time truly stood
still for you. It is my belief and conviction that with enough attention
to detail, especially to the eyes of your loved one, we can truly
capture the nature of the soul - the source of light, life, and passion
for living.
Commissioned portraiture is creatively composed using
your favourite photos of people and pets in
oil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, coloured pencil, and acrylic, on surfaces
including varying papers, canvas, suede matboard, and sliced rock including
Brazilian Agate.

Polaroid Manipulation
Process Photography
I have been working in
the medium of photographic manipulation for over 7 years.
I am self-taught
in this process, learning mostly from trial and error. The
process used to
create these artistic photographs is a unique one. The photos are
shot with
an old 1970’s style Polaroid SX70 camera. The emulsion is then
manually
manipulated directly on the photo with a stylus tool, blurring the lines
of
what is perceived as conventional photography. The photos, which are printed
on archival quality canvas or watercolour paper, are often considered
painterly
and dreamlike. Photographic reality slips in and out of view as
some elements of
the photos are manipulated, while other aspects are left in
their natural state.

Most of my photographs
focus on the natural beauty of the Comox Valley. I currently have a
collection of over 120 photographs including: a sunflower series, an antique
car series and a garden flower series. This process is limited in its body
of work worldwide. Polaroid no longer makes the manipulating film (known as
Time Zero); it was discontinued as of Dec. 2007. I recently acquired some
film from Switzerland, and I have 80 shots left to complete my artistic
journey working within this medium. As an emerging artist in a very unique
field, I look forward to sharing my creative work with the Comox Valley
community and beyond.
