ARTISTS WORK APPEARING
AT THE COMOX RECREATION CENTER

2012

Wednesday, January 25th - April 25th

1. Diana Pohl                                                    Imaginarium Creations

Born and raised in rural Alberta, Diana spent most of her life in the Edmonton area. She attended Grant MacEwan College (now MacEwan University), and worked in both the public and private sector.

Diana moved to Comox with her partner, Bill, in 2006, and has recently returned to the creative world. Previously she had a number of freelance articles published, owned and operated her own small craft shop, and created and sold crafts in craft fairs and retail outlets.

While she continues to craft in a variety of mediums, she has become more involved in the world of digital photography and photo editing, enjoying both the capture and the enhancement of images.

With her photographic portfolio consisting mainly of Vancouver Island pictures (particularly the Comox Valley), she enjoys a variety of photographic opportunities. Her collection is comprised of landscapes, seascapes, portraiture, nature and macro work, as well as still life images.

Diana’s work has been shown locally at the Muir Gallery, Rhodos, South Hollow Gallery and other locations within the Comox Valley. She has also shown at the Ladysmith Waterfront Art Gallery. A new member of the Pearl Ellis Gallery, her creations will be appearing at both the Gallery and its satellite exhibition locations commencing in 2012.

2. Pat Stauffer                                                              Studio Name: Impressions

Impressions…………… everyone has a different impression of what they see around them. Each of us has something that we see which triggers an emotion or a memory

While painting what pleases her senses Pat creates her impression of what she has seen. If she manages to strike a cord that plays a memory back to a viewer, she often finds that this will be the person who buys her painting. On her travels Pat has been fortunate to use her camera to capture impressions that she finds pleasing and has amassed a large inventory of photographs from Canada, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, England, the Mediterranean and the United States. Many sources of inspiration are close to home while walking through some of the local parks, in a garden or in one of our local parks. When she takes a picture she usually has a painting forming in her mind.

“I try to keep my subject matter varied as I find this keeps me fresh. I really enjoy painting flowers and nature but I want to continue to challenge myself with something different that will appeal to others. I feel excited about expanding my creative horizons.

Pat usually does a detailed drawing and stays pretty much to realism. Every effort is made to work with the best paper and paints available with attention to conservation techniques in the framing so that a client will know they have a piece of original art that will last for many years and will look as fresh as the day they acquired it.

Pat is a member of the Campbell River Arts Council, Comox Valley Arts Council and Pearl Ellis Gallery.

3.  Bert Badey

For more than 30 years Bert has lived the adventurers life of a Guide –Outfitter.  He has guided nature lovers, fly-fishers, hunters, canoeists, and photographers from all over the world at his lodge in northern BC.  Bert is now happily retired and living on Vancouver Island in the beautiful Comox Valley with his wife Janice.

Bert sees landscapes and other outdoor subjects from his own point of view and turns them into works of art.  Many years ago I sat on top of a mountain looking into high mountain valley below me I could see bull moose feeding on willows, higher up to my right in the snowcapped rocks a mountain goat nanny with her two kids was resting in the rocks, then a golden eagle drew lazy circles just below my vantage point.  That’s when I decided “ I have to share these beautiful views”.  That’s what I am still doing .

5. Lynda Glover                  Bachelor of Education, Double Major in Design and Painting, Teacher

George Orwell once said, “The energy that shapes the world springs from emotions”. Lynda's emotional connection with art and creativity goes back as far as she can remember, as a small child drawing and painting in her backyard in East Vancouver. She had lots of opportunity for doing art, working on projects with her mother and father, drawing and painting at Beaconsfield Elementary and Gladstone Highschool. Lynda's Gladstone art teacher, Don Joplin, provided many experiences with fine artists to draw and paint from nature and models. “We were lucky to have days drawing with Jack Shadbolt and his contemporaries at the Vancouver School of Art.”

At the University of British Columbia, Lynda was inspired by many fine art teachers, including Penny Goldstone, Sam Black, Bob Steele, Jim MacDonald, Jim Healy, and Gordon Smith. She graduated from university in 1971 with a teaching degree and a double major in art. She spent thirty-six years teaching children and adults, being an art coordinator, developing curriculum and serving on committees for West Vancouver and the Comox Valley.

Lynda's interests in hiking, biking, gardening, canoeing, and skiing with her husband, Ross and two sons, Jon and Pat, have taken her outdoors to explore and experience nature. She loves capturing images on her camera that help remind her of the amazing colours, textures and patterns that she paints. As a teacher, she has focused on teaching those around her to communicate, not just in words, but in all types of expressive mediums: painting, drawing, clay-work, jewellery, fabric-arts, weaving, song, dance and drama. Lynda developed many lesson plans using art history and all types of art activities. She has been inspired my many artists, including Vincent Van Gogh, Emily Carr, and Gustav Klimt.

Van Gogh said, “Colour in a picture is like enthusiasm in life”. Now, as a retired teacher, Lynda has time to be enthusiastic about life and “paint her dreams” and hopes to inspire others to be creative and develop their own artistic skills.

6. Kay Bukta

I have recently moved to the Comox Valley with the express idea in mind of capturing the wonders of nature through photography and converting that energy to oil painting.  My digital camera is my current canvas.  I have just finished setting up my little studio and I am very busy between the camera and the brush.

All my life I have been involved in creating works to exercise the imagination from the very artisan in nature to original art form.  Over the years I have taken many training sessions in drawing, color management, designing, ceramics and computer art. I love it all and find it difficult to keep myself limited to one or two things at a time.
